Who owns 0121 numbers? What Ofcom’s data shows

Ofcom, the UK telecoms regulator, publishes which company holds every block of numbers. For 0121 it lists 579 allocated blocks of 10,000 numbers spread over 176 companies. BT still has the largest share with 223 blocks; then come Virgin Media with 55, Vodafone with 39, Gamma with 22 and GCI with 12. The remaining 171 companies hold 228 blocks between them, often just one each. Of the 55 blocks allocated since 2020, Gamma took 8, Vodafone and BT 5 each and Colt 4: most new 0121 numbers go to business and internet phone services. So an unknown 0121 caller is as likely to be a firm’s phone system as a Birmingham home. Source: Ofcom numbering data, October 2026.

Fake UK landline calls from abroad are now blocked

UK phone companies must stop calls from abroad that show a UK landline number they don’t really have. Ofcom announced the requirement in July 2024 and it took effect on 29 January 2025. Spoofed 0121 calls from overseas should now be caught, so most 0121 calls you receive are genuinely made through a UK provider, which doesn’t mean they are wanted or safe. Missed a call from 0121? Before you ring back

Look the number up first: if nobody has reported it and it belongs to a business you deal with, call back. If you don’t know it, let it go to voicemail. Sales calls stop once your number is on the free Telephone Preference Service (TPS) list. Nuisance or scam calls can be reported to the ICO (0303 123 1113), and Ofcom asks people to forward scam texts to 7726. If a Birmingham caller has already taken money from you, report it to Report Fraud (reportfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040), the national service that replaced Action Fraud in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Ringing a 0121 number costs the same as any landline call; GOV.UK puts it at up to 16p a minute from a landline and 3p to 65p from a mobile, unless your package includes it.
