Canada’s busiest area codes
Canada uses the same +1 country code as the United States, so a Canadian number looks just like an American one. The area code is what tells them apart. These are the Canadian codes people look up most, with the number of exchanges each one has in service according to the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNAC).

How Canadian area codes work
Each area code covers a region, and when a region runs out of numbers a new code is added on top of the old one instead of splitting it. That is why Toronto has four codes for the same city and British Columbia has six for the same province. A number keeps its area code when its owner moves or switches carriers.
Scam calls from Canadian numbers
Scammers fake Canadian numbers to look local to Canadians, and some calls to Americans come from Canadian numbers too. Report fraud in Canada to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, cut telemarketing with the National Do Not Call List (DNCL), and in the US report unwanted calls to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Frequently asked questions
What are the main area codes in Canada?
Toronto uses 416, 647, 437 and 942, and the suburbs around it (“the 905”) use 905, 289, 365 and 742. Ottawa and Eastern Ontario use 613, 343 and 753; southwestern Ontario 519, 226, 548 and 382; Alberta 403, 780, 587, 825 and 368; British Columbia 604, 250, 778, 236, 672 and 257; and Nova Scotia and PEI 902 and 782. Canada shares the +1 country code with the United States.
Is a call from a Canadian area code international?
Canada is part of the North American Numbering Plan, so calls between the US and Canada are dialed like long-distance calls with +1, not as international calls. What you pay depends on your plan.
Who manages Canadian phone numbers?
The Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNAC) assigns blocks of numbers to carriers, under rules set by the CRTC. The exchange counts on this page come from CNAC’s public records of October 23, 2026.
