Check any UK number: what type of number it is, the network it's on and whether it's been reported for scams.

Find out who called you in the UK. Missed call from an 07 number you don’t know, or a text claiming to be from your bank, HMRC or a delivery company? The United Kingdom is already selected in the lookup, so you can type it just as you see it, for example 07700 900123. We tell you for free the number type, the network when available, whether it’s VOIP and whether it appears in spam or fraud reports.

✅ Number type: mobile, geographic, 03, 08 or premium 09
✅ Network, when our sources have it
✅ Spam and fraud reports
✅ A name only when there is public proof of it

What the first digits of a UK number tell you

UK numbers are allocated by Ofcom. Before you run one through a UK phone number checker, the first digits after the 0 already tell you what kind of number is calling:

  • 07 — mobiles: most numbers starting 071 to 075 and 077 to 079 are mobiles. Two exceptions matter: 070 numbers are «personal numbers» that redirect to another phone and can cost much more to call, and 076 is mostly used for pagers.
  • 01 and 02 — geographic landlines: tied to an area, such as 020 for London, 0121 for Birmingham or 0161 for Manchester.
  • 03 — non-geographic: used by public bodies, charities and businesses, charged at the same rate as a call to 01 or 02.
  • 080 — freephone, and 084 and 087 — service numbers that add a service charge.
  • 09 — premium rate: the most expensive numbers to call. Be wary of any message asking you to call one back.

Mobile numbers can move between networks, so the first digits don’t tell you whether a number is on EE, Vodafone, O2, Three or a virtual operator today. The lookup shows the network our sources report.

For UK mobiles the report also names the network the number range was allocated to, such as EE, O2, Vodafone or Three, and warns that the number may since have moved to another network.

UK area codes: where a call from an 01 or 02 number comes from

Got a missed call from a number starting 020, 0121 or 0161 and want to know who called you from it? The area code tells you the town before you even run the lookup:

  • England: 020 London · 0121 Birmingham · 0161 Manchester · 0113 Leeds · 0114 Sheffield · 0115 Nottingham · 0116 Leicester · 0117 Bristol · 0118 Reading · 0151 Liverpool · 0191 Newcastle and Tyneside · 024 Coventry · 023 Southampton and Portsmouth · 01223 Cambridge · 01865 Oxford · 01273 Brighton · 01482 Hull · 01603 Norwich · 01752 Plymouth
  • Scotland: 0141 Glasgow · 0131 Edinburgh · 01224 Aberdeen
  • Wales: 029 Cardiff
  • Northern Ireland: 028 for the whole of Northern Ireland, including Belfast

Type the full number in the lookup above to see its exact area, whether it's a landline, mobile or VOIP line, and whether anyone has reported it. A local-looking code is no guarantee: scammers can fake the caller ID, so check the number before you call back.

Common UK phone scams

  • «Your bank’s fraud team»: a caller asks you to move money to a «safe account». Banks never do this.
  • HMRC impersonation: threats of arrest or fines over unpaid tax.
  • Parcel delivery texts: a link to pay a small «redelivery fee» that steals card details.
  • «Hi Mum» messages: someone claiming to be your child on a new number asking for urgent money.
  • Missed calls from abroad: one-ring calls designed to make you call back an expensive international number.

Where to report UK scam calls and texts

  • Forward scam texts to 7726 — it’s free and works on most UK networks.
  • Call 159 if a call claims to be from your bank: it connects you safely to your bank’s real number.
  • Report fraud to Report Fraud (reportfraud.police.uk), the service that replaced Action Fraud, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101.
  • Register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) to reduce unwanted sales calls.

Your own warning counts as well: after a lookup you can mark the number as a scam, spam or a genuine call, and once three people agree, everyone who checks that UK number sees it.

Can I find out who owns a UK number?

Mobile networks in the UK only release subscriber details to the police or with a court order, and data protection law prevents anyone from selling a reverse directory of mobile numbers. What we can do legally is search the public trail of the number: the whole web, local directories and public profiles. If the owner has left one, the free report shows it with the source. If they haven’t, we tell you plainly — we never make up a name.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check who called me from a UK number?

Type the number in the lookup above as it appears on your phone; the United Kingdom is already selected. You'll see the type of number, the network when available, whether it's VOIP and whether it's been reported for spam or fraud. When the owner is publicly identifiable, the report names them and links the page where we found them.

Is it free to look up a UK phone number?

Free for every UK number, and no sign-up is needed. You get the number type, network, line type and spam reputation, plus the public web trail and a timestamped PDF. It is paid for by the adverts on the site.

What is an 070 number and why is it risky?

An 070 number is a personal number that forwards calls to another phone. It looks like a mobile but can cost much more to call, which is why it's sometimes used in scams. The lookup tells you whether a number is a real mobile or a personal number.

How do I report a scam text in the UK?

Forward it to 7726, which is free on most UK networks. If you've lost money, report it to Report Fraud, the service that replaced Action Fraud, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or to Police Scotland on 101. Contact your bank straight away.

Can you tell me which network a UK mobile number is on?

Often, yes. Because UK numbers can be ported between networks, the first digits aren't enough. We show the network our sources report for the number and say so when it can't be confirmed.

Why can't any website show the owner's name for every UK mobile?

UK networks only release subscriber details to the police or with a court order, and data protection law prevents anyone from selling a reverse directory of mobile numbers. Sites that promise a name for any number usually can't deliver it. We only show an owner when they have a public trail, with the source as proof.

Who called me from an 020, 0161 or 0121 number?

Numbers starting 01 or 02 are landlines tied to an area: 020 is London, 0121 Birmingham, 0161 Manchester, 0141 Glasgow, 0131 Edinburgh, 029 Cardiff and 028 Northern Ireland. Type the full number in the lookup above to see the area, the line type and whether it has been reported. Caller ID can be faked, so a local code doesn't prove the caller is nearby.
