What the first digits of an Australian number tell you

  • 04 — mobiles: almost all Australian mobile numbers start with 04. To check a mobile number in Australia, type it in the lookup above with or without the leading 0.
  • 02, 03, 07 and 08 — landlines by region: 02 for New South Wales and the ACT, 03 for Victoria and Tasmania, 07 for Queensland, and 08 for Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
  • 1800 — freecall, and 13 and 1300 — numbers used by businesses and government agencies, charged at a local-call rate.
  • 1900 — premium rate, the expensive ones to watch out for.

Australian numbers can be ported between carriers, so an 04 number could be on Telstra, Optus, Vodafone/TPG or a smaller provider whatever its first digits. The lookup shows the carrier our sources report.

Common scams in Australia

  • ATO and myGov impersonation: threats about a tax debt, or links to a fake myGov login.
  • Toll road and parcel texts: a link to pay an «unpaid toll» or a «delivery fee».
  • Bank and telco impersonation: a caller asks for a code sent to your phone or for remote access to your computer.
  • «Hi Mum» texts: a message from an unknown 04 number pretending to be a family member who lost their phone and needs money for a bill.

Reporting scam calls and texts in Australia

  • Report it to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au), run by the National Anti-Scam Centre.
  • Report cybercrime through ReportCyber at cyber.gov.au if you’ve lost money or data online.
  • Telstra customers can forward scam texts to 7226 for free.
  • Register on the Do Not Call Register (donotcall.gov.au) to reduce telemarketing calls.
  • If you’ve shared bank details or paid, call your bank immediately.

Before you report it, the free lookup shows whether other Australians have already complained about the number on community report sites, with the number of complaints and the date of the latest one.

There is also a quicker way to warn others: rate the number on the report as a scam, spam or legitimate call. Ratings are anonymous, and when three Australians agree the warning appears for the next person who looks it up.

Can I find out who owns an Australian number?

Carriers don’t publish who owns a mobile number, and privacy law limits who can access subscriber records. What our free reverse phone lookup for Australia searches is the public trail of the number: web pages, Australian directories and public social profiles. When that trail exists, the report links to the page where the number appears. If not, we tell you clearly and never invent a name.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check who called me from an Australian number?

Type it in the lookup above exactly as you know it; Australia is preselected. You'll see whether it's a mobile, landline or business number, the carrier when available, whether it's VOIP and whether it's been reported for spam or scams. If the number belongs to a business or person with a public listing, we show that name next to the page it came from.

Is it free to look up an Australian phone number?

Yes. Looking up any +61 number is free and needs no account. You get the number type, carrier, line type and spam reputation, plus the public web trail and a timestamped PDF. Advertising keeps it free for everyone.

Which Australian numbers are mobiles?

Australian mobile numbers start with 04, or +61 4 in international format. Landlines start with 02, 03, 07 or 08 depending on the state, and business numbers use 13, 1300 or 1800.

Where do I report a scam call in Australia?

Report it to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au, run by the National Anti-Scam Centre. If you lost money or data online, also report it through ReportCyber at cyber.gov.au, and contact your bank immediately.

Can you tell me which carrier an Australian number is on?

Often, yes. Numbers can be ported between carriers, so the first digits aren't enough. The report names the carrier from our sources and tells you when it could not be confirmed.

Can any website show the owner of every Australian mobile?

No. Carriers don't publish subscriber details and privacy law limits access to them. A name only appears when there is a public source for it, and if there is none the report says so plainly.
